Media Relations Manager

Location: Remote work

Status: Part-time / On-call

Commitment: During busy periods, between 7 and 10 hours per week, for one to two weeks, one to three times a year. In off-peak periods, between 0 and 2 hours per week.

Description: The media relations officer manages BESA’s relationships with traditional media and journalists. Their role is to actively help maximize the visibility of the organization’s investigations, awareness campaigns, and political demands by facilitating their coverage in traditional media to advance animal law, primarily in Quebec and across Canada.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Media Strategy: Design and/or execute communication plans for the launch of petitions, investigative reports (or other reports), or legal campaigns.
  • Media Relations: Engaging, developing, and maintaining relationships with the media
  • Networking: Building a network of contacts with journalists (national, regional, and specialized) and maintaining an up-to-date database of social media accounts and traditional press journalists who are sympathetic to our cause.
  • Writing: Oversee, coordinate, and participate in the drafting of relevant and impactful press releases, media kits, open letters, and talking points.
  • Spokesperson duties: Act as one of BESA’s official spokespeople, and/or prepare members of the executive team for interviews (briefing, coaching).
  • Monitoring and Analysis: Schedule regular media monitoring to track news related to animal welfare and analyze the impact of BESA’s media coverage. Write brief reports for the BESA Board of Administrators following each monitoring session to keep them informed.
  • Crisis Management: In the event of urgent current issues, promptly notify the BESA Board of Administrators to allow the organization to react quickly and take a public stance in line with its internal positions when necessary.

Candidate profile:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field, or a combination of experience in one of these areas.
  • Experience: Media relations (experience in a non-profit or political environment is a major asset and would be highly valued).
  • Languages: Proficiency in French and English, both oral and written (essential for national media).
  • Technical skills: Excellent journalistic writing skills and the ability to popularize complex legal or ethical concepts. Good knowledge of the media landscape. Good knowledge of the animal rights movement in Quebec or an interest in learning.

Personal qualities

  • Commitment: Deep passion for animal welfare and alignment with BESA’s values.
  • Responsiveness: Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced media environment (24/7 news cycle) and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Diplomacy: The ability to negotiate and maintain professional relationships, even when faced with conflicting ideas.
  • Political acumen: Understanding of legislative issues and decision-making mechanisms in Quebec.

Manager, Political Party Relations in Quebec

Location: Remote work

Status: Part-time / On-call

Commitment: During peak periods, between 5 and 7 hours per week for one to two weeks, one to three times a year. During off-peak periods, between 0 and 1 hour per week.

Description: The person responsible for relations with political parties is in charge of developing and maintaining strategic relationships with provincial political parties and press attachés. This individual ensures that BESA’s priorities and recommendations are positioned with political stakeholders and provides strategic monitoring of relevant political and legislative issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Relationship Building: Develop and maintain professional relationships with representatives of Quebec’s political parties (elected officials, political attachés, public policy leads, etc.).
  • Monitoring and Analysis: Ensure political monitoring of files relevant to BESA’s mission.
  • Representation: Representing BESA at meetings, public consultations, political events, and discussion forums.
  • Coordination: Coordinate exchanges between BESA and political parties while respecting the non-partisan nature of the organization.
  • Communications: Collaborate with the communications team and other departments to ensure the consistency of BESA’s public messaging and positions.
  • Strategy Development: Contribute to the development of influence and mobilization strategies regarding BESA’s priority issues.
  • Meetings: Help organize meetings, round tables, or events that bring together political stakeholders and civil society.
  • Legislative Analysis: Identifying provincial and federal laws and municipal bylaws that BESA should campaign on to achieve short- or medium-term gains for animals
  • Legislative monitoring: Tracking current bills to identify opportunities to achieve wins for animals
  • Initial contact: Contact political parties on behalf of BESA to organize meetings and advocate for amendments or laws proposed by BESA.

Candidate profile:

  • Education: University degree in political science, public relations, law, public administration, or a related field.
  • Experience: Relevant experience in government relations, public affairs, policy, or advocacy (an asset).
  • Knowledge: Good knowledge of the Quebec political system and the main political parties, i.e., good knowledge of the federal, municipal, and provincial political spheres
  • Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills in French (English is an asset), i.e., a strong ability to express ideas clearly and persuasively, both in writing and speaking.
  • Analysis: Political analysis and synthesis skills.
  • Responsiveness: Strong ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Networking: The ability to develop and maintain a network of contacts.
  • Professionalism: Diplomacy, sound judgment, and respect for confidentiality.
  • Commitment: Adherence to BESA’s values and mission.

Strengths:

  • Work experience within a political party, a minister’s office, or a civil society organization.
  • Knowledge of legislative processes and public consultations in Quebec.
  • Experience in drafting briefs or representing interests before government bodies.
  • Legal experience
  • Good knowledge of the animal rights movement in Quebec and internationally, or an interest in learning about it.
